Teaching is a popular profession for military spouses. Teachers are needed everywhere, andas Kate McKenney has experienced, there are a variety of ways to utilize an educator’s tool kit. Shortly after starting her teaching career, Kate realized her aspiration of becoming a school administrator. Taking the steps necessary to fulfill this aspiration can be difficult as a military spouse. Such a move requires additional schooling, state licensing, and administrative experience. While living in North Carolina, Kate realized the need for additional preschool options for families with young children such as herself. She employed all ofher past experience in education and founded the New Bern Cooperative Preschool. This remarkable school thrives today even though Kate andher family have since relocated. Currently living in Northern Virginia, Kate seized the opportunity to return to school, andis earning her doctorate in school administration from Johns Hopkins University.
As military spouses, we’ve seen first hand the joys and challenges of our lifestyle. We have spent countless hours discussing our dual roles as career professionals and military spouses. Out of these conversations, we’ve formed The Other Side of Service (OSS), a community for military spouse professionals.
