Laura Winthrop Abbot
Laura Winthrop Abbot understands what it means to live a life of service. She is a loyal public servant and a devoted spouse to a military member. After only a few months of dating, hernow husband was being relocated to Japan, and Laura faced a significant life choice. Giving up a fulfilling job and moving around the world were only the first steps of Laura’s service. Shortly after her arrival in Japan, an enormous earthquake andtsunami struck the country, and again, Laura faced a choice. Without hesitation, she decided to shift all her time and talents to the recovery effort. This early call to action developed into a sustainable effort called theTOMODACHI Initiative, which provides educational exchange and leadership development opportunities for young people from the tsunami-hit region and beyond. Building this organization from scratch was the opportunity of a lifetime for Laura. Not only was she able to lead a groundbreaking public-private partnership, it also prepared her for her future work at the U.S.- Japan Council and the U.S. Department of State.
As military spouses, we’ve seen first hand the joys and challenges of our lifestyle. We have spent countless hours discussing our dual roles as career professionals and military spouses. Out of these conversations, we’ve formed The Other Side of Service (OSS), a community for military spouse professionals.
